Hawai‘i Labor Dept. Announces End of All Federal Pandemic UI & Assistance Programs
With federal unemployment benefits ending on Sept. 4, 20201, the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations is working to ensure that unemployed individuals who will be losing the extra aid are aware of the upcoming changes and potential next steps.
Hawaiʻi Unemployment Rate Drops Slightly to 9% for March 2021, But Higher Than National Rate of 6%
The state of Hawaiʻi’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for March 2021 was 9 percent compared to 9.2 percent in February, with 590,800 people employed and 58,750 unemployed in March for a total seasonally adjusted labor force of 649,550, according to the Hawai‘i State Department of Labor & Industrial Relations.

Although the U.S. DOL projected that many states would need until the middle of April or later to implement the new provisions and begin notifying individuals, the department notes there will be no lag in benefits for most claimants as long as they remain eligible for benefits.
Maui Island Unemployment Rate 12.7 Percent in February 2021
Unemployment on the Island of Maui was 12.7 percent in February, down from 14.1 percent the previous month, but still well above the 1.7 percent rate reported in February of last year, prior to the pandemic.

Unemployment on the Island of Maui was 14.1 percent in January, down from 13.8 percent the previous month, but still well above the 2 percent rate reported in January of last year, prior to the pandemic.
11-Week Extension set to Begin for Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation Program
The CAA allows PEUC claimants an additional 11 weeks of benefits payable for the week ending Jan. 2 through March 13 and a phaseout to April 10, 2021. Payments will also include the additional $300 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation weekly benefit.
Hawai‘i UI Benefit Extensions Update
Programming updates and federal funding has allowed the state Department of Labor & Industrial Relations to offer a choice of either Extended Benefits (EB20) or Pandemic Unemployment Emergency Compensation (PEUC) for claimants that filed for EB20 between Dec. 15 and 28, 2020.
