During an Appropriations Subcommittee oversight hearing on the US Department of Health and Human Services’ budget request, US Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) secured a commitment from HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to support Hawaiʻi’s recovery efforts following the kona low storms that caused flooding across the state.

With the presidential disaster declaration in effect, the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs advises that certain federal mortgage relief provisions are now triggered, which may include foreclosure moratoriums, forbearance options and the waiver of late fees.

President Barack Obama today declared a federal disaster for following heavy rains and flooding that resulted in millions in dollars in damage to ʻĪao Valley on Maui.

Initial assessments put the Iao flood damage estimate at $15 million. About 20 families were directly impacted by the storm. The county and National Guard continue are working to clear an estimated 9,000 truckloads of debris.

The declaration was in response to an Oct. 24 request made by Governor Neil Abercrombie for federal aid.
