Hawaiʻi Island Police have identified the victim of yesterday’s officer-involved shooting on the Big Island as 30-year-old Tori M. Kaneshiro of Pāhoa.

The victim, a 32-year-old man, also from Leilani Estates, told police that he and several acquaintances were surveying the area of his former residence that had since been taken by lava when they were approached by a man in a pickup truck.

The officer, who is a two-year member of the department, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.

The victim that was struck by the suspect vehicle, a 54-year-old male from Kea‘au, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center where he was treated and later released.

Although initial reports to police indicated that a juvenile male sustained a BB-gun related injury, officials say the victim sustained an actual gunshot wound.

According to police reports, a 39-year-old Mountain View woman told authorities that a male suspect fired gunshots at her following a verbal confrontation in which she had gone to the his residence to retrieve property.
