Nearly 1,000 participants ran and walked in last weekend’s 12th annual Maui 5K, raising more than $57,000 for Maui Nui schools. The participation from Maui residents and visitors alike marked a record number for the event.

The Hawai‘i State Department of Education is celebrating 83 of its teachers statewide who have earned or renewed their National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification – a recognition for meeting the highest standards for teaching. 

More than $87.7 million was released in July and August for Capital Improvement Projects across the state, including more than $16 million for projects in Maui County.

A total of 89 grants were distributed to public school teachers across Oʻahu, Maui, Lānaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island to help purchase classroom supplies and enhance student curriculums.

Yoshida has been teaching for 13 years and in 2013, helped to open Puʻu Kukui Elementary in Wailuku, where she is currently a curriculum coordinator.

Maui math teacher, Eliza Akana Yoshida is one of four teachers in Hawaiʻi who were recognized today with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Maui’s Kīhei Charter School was identified as the top scoring school for 11th Grade ACT scores with a 75% score, the highest in the state.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education’s newest school, Puʻu Kukui in Wailuku, is celebrating the completion of its milestone first year with a school-wide celebration and dedication ceremony on Friday, May 16, 2014.

After five years as Maui area superintendent for the Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui complex, Bruce Anderson, will transition away from the post and take on a new role as principal at Maui High School.

Maui broke ground today on a new $37.1 million elementary school that will serve the growing Central Maui community of Wailuku.
