Maui High School is fixing to hire its fourth football coach in 10 years, confirming the resignation of Keith Shirota, a Saber graduate and long-time educator on the Lono Avenue campus.

Never under estimate the power of goal setting or the value of education. Thanks to a strict up-bringing and the support of his late grandmother, Maui High school student-athlete Feleti Afemui accepted a full-scholarship Tuesday to attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., considered by some to be the “Stanford of the East Coast.”

The pride of Maui High School, student-athlete Feleti Afemui, made his decision to attend Vanderbilt University next fall on a football scholarship official Tuesday, signing a National Letter of Intent before a classroom full of family, friends and faculty.

Maui High School’s Hanisi Lotulelei finished with a career high 222 yards rushing and four touchdowns Friday night as the Sabers’ football team spoiled Kamehameha Maui’s senior night with a lopsided 26-7 win.

While the Lahainaluna High School football team has enjoyed some outstanding individual efforts this season, none compares to the team effort the Lunas have demonstrated in September.

The often unappreciated exercise of executing the center snap in a football game saw its value soar to new heights Friday as errant snaps contributed to all the scoring in Maui High’s 14-2 triumph at Lahainaluna.

With his senior season more than four months away, Feleti Afemui is feeling blessed.
