The purchase of the 19-acre property comes nearly three years after the Aug. 8, 2023 wildfire destroyed the offices, coffee mill and other buildings owned by Pioneer Mill Company, a subsidiary of Kaanapali Land.

Nan Inc., which purchased the mill and about 300 surrounding acres in 2024, hopes to turn the old plantation infrastructure into an area for businesses and light industrial use — and potentially housing in the future.

A bill seeking to dissolve the Agribusiness Development Corporation and transfer all its resource except the director to the Department of Agriculture was passed unamended by the House Agriculture Committee on Feb. 17.

The Sugar Operators Support Taskforce was created a year ago today after HC&S announced it would be shutting down sugar operations on Maui by December 2016.

The final load of sugar from Maui went out of port at Kahului Harbor this morning. Blaring boat horns could be heard throughout central Maui as the departure marked the end of an era for sugar in the islands.

For those that have flown in to Kahului Airport, including tourists and visitors alike, the fields of cane have served as a green welcome-carpet of sorts to those arriving on Maui. Will that green turn into a brown dust bowl, or be replaced by a different crop going forward?

Residents of the Keʻanae Lowlands are in opposition to the bill and are gathering at the Oʻahu State capitol tomorrow for the meeting, which starts at 2:45 p.m.
