From culture to music and theater, Maui has it all this weekend. There’s a falsetto contest being held in conjunction with the Maui Festivals of Aloha, a youth ʻukulele contest in Kāʻanapali, and a throwback concert featuring rock favorite America.

The first five presenters include: visionary artist Alex Grey; renewable energy pioneer Quayle Hodek; Hawaii Watermen’s Hall of Famer Archie Kalepa; Maui Preparatory Academy teacher Jenelle Peterson; and poet and author Kim Rosen.

Maui Cultural Lands President, Edwin “Ekolu” Lindsay has been added to a list of inspirational speakers participating in the upcoming TEDxMaui conference.

Each year the group brings together people from the these unique realms to share inspirational and revolutionary ideas with the public. A pre-event talk story session and film screening will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, January 5th at the Akaku: Maui Community Television, media lab on Dairy Road.

The announcement coincides with the beginning of ticket sales, which began October 3rd. Tickets are $99 each and available through the MACC.

A local and independently organized version of the world-famous TED conference will be held on Maui in early 2012.
