The Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s signature triennial portrait exhibition has made the move from Kahului to Oʻahu for a six-month run at the state’s official art museum.

Maui Arts & Cultural Center has announced the winners of the Ruth Freedman People’s Choice Award and Gene Freedman Artists’ Choice Award for Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2025.

Maui artist Challys Pascual has won the Jurors’ Choice Award for the Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2025 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

A signature of Maui Arts and Cultural Center, the Schaefer Portrait Challenge, has been held as a triennial since 2003. This year’s challenge will mark the eighth iteration of this statewide juried exhibition, which presents the unique diversity of the people of the Hawaiian Islands through explorations in portraiture.
