HeleWai Eco Tours, in partnership with the Pu‘u Kukui Watershed Preserve, announced the launch of a monthly community initiative aimed to educate, inspire, and perpetuate conservation efforts across the island. 

More than 20 tons of sediment has been captured in the mountains above Lahaina in West Maui as a result of a collaborative restoration project led by the Coral Reef Alliance.

Maui’s Coral Reef Alliance has launched an at-home native planting opportunity for volunteers in lieu of other watershed restoration work, which was suspended in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, the mayor transmitted a request to the Maui County Council in order to purchase 8,764 acres of land and easements owned by Wailuku Water Company.

The West Maui Watershed Plan is a multi-agency effort that will propose a recommended strategy to address land-based sources of pollutants that adversely affect water quality and the health of coral reef ecosystems off shore of the five West Maui watersheds.

A Watershed Characterization Report was intended to evaluate watershed processes and determine land uses and activities that may generate non-point source pollutants or alter hydrolic and ecological processes within the three watersheds.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the US Army Corps of Engineers will host a workshop in Lahaina on Thursday, Nov. 20, to share results of the Draft Watershed Characterization Study for the West Maui watersheds of Kahana, Honokahua, and Honolua.

The initiative is one of the first efforts in the state to implement a comprehensive management strategy to address impacts to coral reefs across multiple watersheds. The watershed plan will be funded 75% by the Corps and 25% by DLNR.
