Temporary interisland shipping disruptions are expected for small container or palletized shipping as a result of COVID-19 related worker impacts at the Young Brothers shipyard on Maui, Mayor Michael Victorino confirmed.
PUC Approves Young Brothers’ Temporary Changes to Sailing Schedule
The Public Utilities Commission on Monday approved temporary emergency changes to Young Brothers’ sailing schedule for 30 days. The changes take effect immediately and will result in an amended weekly sailing schedule for Maui and Hawaiʻi counties.
Young Brothers Requests Reduced Schedule for Maui Starting May 5
YB may supplement service from Moloka‘i as needed with an occasional stopover on Wednesday morning as the Kawaihae barge returns to the port of Honolulu. The service is intended to facilitate the timely transport of fresh produce from Moloka‘i to the neighboring islands and support the farming and agriculture industries. The occasional Kawaihae/Kaunakakai stopover will allow fresh produce from Moloka‘i to reach the neighbor-island markets.

YB says the drop is due to the closure of the Maui Farmers Co-Op, which previously utilized all three weekly Young Brothers sailings from Kahului to Honolulu.

For the first three months of 2016, Kahului, the largest Neighbor Island port in terms of volume, was down 1.9%.
