A for Authentic: Ohana Tacos is Best in the West
By Erica Garza
If you have driven through Honokowai between the hours of 6-10pm during the week within the past four years, you will have seen it. West Maui’s Ohana Tacos is a taco truck establishment adorned with lights and almost always surrounded by hungry customers.
Situated in the parking lot of AAAAA Rent-A-Space on Lower Honoapiilani Road, this cash-only eatery run by owner Oscar Gonzales offers a smorgasbord of authentic Mexican favorites, from tortas and quesadillas to alambres and fajitas. But the real treat here is undeniably the assortment of tacos, from pork and chicken to beef and Ono on either handmade corn tortillas or giant flour tortillas.
Maui Now gave the Ono fish taco platter a try, two mildly sweet and flaky pieces of fish in flour tortillas dressed with sour cream, onion, tomato, cabbage, cilantro and jalapeno. All this with a side of rice and beans. Zesty, spicy and filling, just one bite of an Ohana taco put all other Mexican restaurants in West Maui to shame.
Entirely family-run, Ohana Tacos is a satisfying solution to the drought of real Mexican food on this side of the island. For those seeking a quick bite that’s cheap in cost but not in quality, skip Maui Tacos and Taco Bell and head to Honokowai instead. Tacos a la carte start at just $3 while a burrito or fajita platter with rice and beans goes for $9.95 and up. Ask for the market price on the Ono fish platter.
Although Ohana Tacos is a bona fide taco truck, there are a few foldout tables set up for sit-down eating, a salsa bar with a flavorful range of mild to fiery, and festive music to seal the deal. Treat your taste buds to the best and most authentic Mexican food in West Maui.
Ohana Tacos is located at 3600 Lower Honoapiilani Road in the AAAAA Rent-A-Space parking lot.
