Maui Retailer Makes Out For Marriage Equality
By Wendy Osher
A group of same-sex marriage supporters on Maui will pucker this weekend as part of a nationwide ‘Kiss and Tell’ protest. The LUSH Cosmetic store on Front Street in Lahaina will participate in the event to promote marriage equality.
The Kiss and Tell protest takes place at 11:38 a.m. on Saturday, June 18th outside of the West Maui store, located at 713 Front Street. The time was selected to signify the number of protections, responsibilities, and rights that advocates of same-sex marriage say are denied in the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
The event includes a postcard signing session in which supporters will send messages to the federal government, seeking marriage equality for same-sex couples. LUSH, in partnership with Freedom to Marry, is seeking passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.
“We believe that that everyone should have the freedom to marry the person they love,” said LUSH Campaign Manager Brandi Halls. “Many of our staff, customers, friends and family are not given the same rights as everyone else and we felt, for the sake of our friends, we had to challenge this injustice,” said Halls.
