Bears, Sabers Post Football Victories

The MIL football campaign resumed over the weekend with Baldwin and Maui High posting victories.

Quarterback Keelan Ewalike ran for 190 yards and one score on 20 carries and passed for another 99 yards and three scores in leading Baldwin to a 33-22 road win over stubborn Kamehameha-Maui.

Ninth-ranked Baldwin improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the MIL.  Kamehameha dropped to 1-4 in league action.

The wins have been few and far between for Maui High in recent years.  But the Sabers are showing signs of turning around that trend by posting their second win of the season.

Maui High’s defense led the way, limiting King Kekaulike to just two first downs and 89 yards in total offense en route to a 23-7 road victory. Kekaulike’s only score came on a 99-yard kickoff return by Kepa Luat-Hueu that closed the gap to 17-7.

Although completing just three of 16 passes for 41 yards, the Sabers got excellent production from its pair of sophomore running backs.  Justin McCrary gained 81 yards on 13 carries and Chastin Valdez had 66 on nine tries.  Quarterback Siueli Vaha aldded 79 on 17 carries.

This week, Baldwin hosts Kekaulike on Friday and Lahainaluna meets Kamehameha-Maui on Friday. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Kickoffs at War Memorial Stadium.

STATE RECAP:  No. 1 Farrington and No. 3 Leilehua survived major scares over the weekend. Farrington rallied for a 28-24 win over Moanalua while Leilehua pulled out a 40-33 win over Mililani after blowing a big lead.

In other games involving ranked teams:  No. 2 Kahuku blanked Castle 35-0. No. 4 Punahou beat Pac-Five 35-0. No. 5 Campbell defeated Aiea 22-18. No. 6 Kamehameha bounced back from last week’s loss to Punahou by routing No. 8 Iolani 55-14. No. 7 Saint Louis mauled  Damien 63-0. Tenth-ranked and unbeaten Kaimuki spanked Waipahu 35-7, setting up a a showdown with Pearl City, which also is unbeaten in league action.  The Chargers are coming off a 43-21 win over Kalaheo.

In other games: Waianae dominated Radford 49-13.  Kaiser beat Roosevelt 39-14.  Kalani defeated Anuenue 50-24.  McKinley mauled Waialua 42-6. … On Hawaii Island:  Konawaena beat HPA 21-14 in a key D-II showdown and Kamehaheha-Hawaii defeated Kohala 43-6. Kapaa beat Kauai High 16-7.
