Maui’s Employee Count Decreases, Pay Stabilizes

According to the US Census Bureau, Maui County total business establishments decreased 2% from 4,422 establishments in 2005 to 4,332 in 2010.

Figures released by the US Census Bureau in its annual County Business Patterns (CPB) indicate that total employee counts have decreased by 7% between 2005 and 2010, while annual payroll has increased only slightly by 1%.

Total Maui County paid employees for the pay period including March 12 decreased 7% from 61,927 in 2005 to 57,370 in 2010. First quarter payroll and annual payroll for Maui County also increased slightly to $1,919,722 between 2005 and 2010.

The CBP is an annual series from the US Census Bureau that provides sub-national economic data, by industry, that was released in June 2012. This series includes the number of establishments, employment during the week of March 12, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll.

Paid employees in Maui County’s construction industry decreased by 21% and annual payroll decreased by 23% between 2005 and 2010. Total construction establishments decreased by 4% from 446 to 463 in Maui County.

Accommodations and food service industry in Maui County saw a decrease by 12% in paid employees and 7% in annual payroll decreased between 2005 and 2010 with total establishments increasing by 2 to 500.

Real estate in Maui County also saw a dramatic drop in paid employees going from 22,387 in 2005 to 19,802, or a 12% decrease.

Professional and technical services dropped by 28% in the amount of paid employees between 2005 and 2010 to 1,340 paid employees and annual payroll decreased by 10% for the same time period, while the amount of companies increased by 2% to 365.
