A small plane that made an emergency landing on the Piʻilani Highway on Monday night, had experienced “engine trouble,” according to fire officials responding to the scene.

The incident was first reported at 7:02 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, on the Piʻilani Highway.

The plane, described by witnesses as a Mokulele Airlines “Express” aircraft, landed approximately 50 yards south of the Piʻilani Highway / Kilohana Drive intersection, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

A total of 10 people were on board including eight passengers and two pilots, officials tell Maui Now.

The airplane is intact, and there were no injuries reported according to FS Chief Mainaga.

[flashvideo file=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXFg29dsoUQ /] The Piʻilani Highway remained closed between Kilohana Drive and Wailea Ike Drive until around 10:45 p.m. while officials with the State Department of Transportation conducted an investigation.

According to a preliminary report with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Cessna plane sustained only minor damage when pilots force-landed the craft on the highway.

The commuter plane was reportedly en route from Kahului to Kamuela on Hawaiʻi Island when the incident occurred.

A portion of the Piʻilani Highway on Maui is closed at this hour due to the emergency landing of a small aircraft, police said.

According to witnesses in the area, the plane is described as a Mokulele Airlines “Express” aircraft.

Witnesses tell Maui Now that the incident is located just past Mapu Place on the Piʻilani Highway.  According to witness reports, passengers are sitting on the guardrail, “appearing emotional,” but no injuries are reported at this time.

The road closure notification was issued at around 7:13 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, and included the portion of the Piʻilani Highway between Keonekai Road and Kilohana Road.
