Grant Funds Maui Portuguese Association Radio Series

The Portuguese Association of Maui is the recipient of an estimated $3,000 grant from the Hawaiʻi Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

The non-profit group plans to use the funds to produce a 26-segment radio series entitled, “Stories of Our People,” scheduled to air on Sundays at 8:30 p.m. on KNUI AM 550.

The series will include discussion on Portuguese folk tales, legends, the “Age of Discoveries,” immigration to Hawaiʻi, poetry, language and music.

“This will give us an opportunity to share our culture and history with others, especially with the children and youth who have some degree of Portuguese ancestry,” Robert Robello, president of the Portuguese Association of Maui, said in a press release.

The grant also includes funds for a beginning Portuguese language class, a Portuguese cuisine workshop, and support for the Heritage Hall Chorale, the organization announced.

The Portuguese Association of Maui was established in 2002, and offers translation services, college scholarships, and language classes.

The association is also a partner with the Maui Puerto Rican Association in the creation and development of Heritage Hall, a facility planned for development in Pāʻia.
