SUMMARY PRINTOUT AS OF 1:26 A.M. 11/5/14

Maui voters have approved an initiative that places a moratorium on GMO cultivation in Maui County.  

A total of 23,082 people vote YES in favor of the moratorium, representing 50.2% of the vote, while 22,005 people (47.9%) voted against the measure.  Just 1,077 votes separated the two sides in the final printout, which was released at around 1:30 this morning.

In the West Maui Council race, incumbent Elle Cochran is reelected after a very close race early on in which her opponent, Ka’ala Buenconsejo led after the first printout.  By the second printout, Cochran had moved ahead by a 153 vote margin, and by the end of the night, Cochran walked away with a victory and reelection to her seat with 48% of the vote, 7.2% ahead of her challenger.  In the Mayor’s race, Alan Arakawa was reelected to another term, defeating his opponent, Tamara Paltin by nearly 16% of the votes.

After the second printout, there are several highlights on the Maui ballot.

In the West Maui Council race, it is still neck and neck with Elle Cochran pulling ahead of Ka’ala Buenconsejo.  Just 153 votes separate the two candidates after the second printout with Cochran garnering 12,329 votes or 45% of the vote, and Buenconsejo garnering 12,176 or 44.5% of the vote .  Another highlight is the GMO ballot initiative.  After the second printout, the “no” votes maintain a lead with 54% of the vote or 14,889 against the initiative and 11,906 votes in favor or 43%.

The Maui numbers so far are ahead of the statewide turnout of 30.5%, and ahead of the Honolulu turnout of 29%.  Kauaʻi has the state’s strongest turnout with 39.1%, followed by Hawaiʻi County, where turnout was 32.8% after the second printout.
