MACC’s Heritage Film Festival: The Hawaiian Room

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center will present The Hawaiian Room as part of its Heritage Film Festival on Sunday, Nov. 8 in the McCoy Studio Theater beginning at 3 p.m.

From 1937 to 1966, hundreds of dancers, singers and musicians from the Hawaiian isles became part of the incredible legacy of the pioneering Hawaiian Room, located at the Hotel Lexington in the heart of New York City. Over the course of three decades, the Hawaiian Room became an incomparable venue through which aloha and Hawaiian culture were shared in vibrant and exciting New York City.

The Hawai‘i-based nonprofit Hula Preservation Society has spent over three years documenting the stories of the young dancers and singers in this film by Ann Marie Kirk. Hear from the entertainers, dancers and patrons who made it such a special place, and be transported to a time in history when hula, Hawaiian music and aloha enchanted New York.

After the film, participate in a Q&A session with several original Hawaiian Room talents.
