Maui Ocean Center’s Seascape Mā‘alaea Restaurant was recently certified as an “Ocean Friendly Restaurant” by Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawai‘i. But that’s not all. It was one of the first restaurants on Maui to go beyond the basic requirements, becoming a Platinum member. Official Platinum certificates will be awarded in June.

Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawai‘i offers basic certification as well as Platinum certification for restaurants that meet eight requirements. Seascape Mā‘alaea Restaurant achieved this top honor by meeting the following criteria:

No EPS foam (styrofoam) use; take-out food containers are recyclable or compostable
Only reusable tableware is provided for onsite dining
Proper recycling practices are followed throughout the restaurant
Plastic straws are provided only upon request or are replaced with compostable straws
All takeout beverage containers are recyclable or compostable
Takeout bags are not made of plastic and are provided only upon request
Only compostable utensils are provided for takeout
No beverages sold in plastic bottles

Restaurant leaders say this Platinum certification is a reflection of Seascape Mā‘alaea’s longtime dedication to serving a menu that is healthy, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. It uses ingredients obtained primarily from local sources on Maui and the state of Hawai‘i, and follows the industry’s best practices in serving a sustainable seafood menu.

The restaurant is open from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, with dinner service coming soon. Visit here  or call (808) 270-7068 for more information.

Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawai‘i (OFR) is a statewide effort to promote restaurants who help protect the ocean by reducing the use of single-use plastics. OFR Hawai‘i was modeled after the Ocean Friendly Restaurants campaign started by the San Diego chapter of Surfrider Foundation. OFR Hawai‘i is a joint effort between the local Hawai‘i Chapters of Surfrider Foundation and the Rise Above Plastics Coalition including Kokua Hawaii Foundation, Maui Huliau Foundation, Styrophobia, Sierra Club of Hawai‘i, Conservation Council for Hawai‘i and Sustainable Coastlines Hawai‘i.
