Maui Lawmakers Secure House Chairmanship Roles

The state House of Representatives today adopted a resolution formalizing new committee assignments, which includes more than 50 changes.

Lawmakers say the changes were based on a number of factors including member requests, changes to caucus, the GOP caucus asking for changes, and the reorganization of committees.

House leaders say the new committee assignments are part of a broader House reorganization and administrative housekeeping that naturally follows from the change in Speaker at the end of the 2017 regular session.

The committee assignments include chairmanship roles for Maui lawmakers. 

• Rep. Lynn DeCoite (Haʻikū, Hāna, Kaupō, Kīpahulu, Nāhiku, Pāʻia, Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, Molokini) will serve as Vice Chair of the Agriculture committee.  She will also serve as a member of the committees on: Finance; Ocean, Marine Resources & Hawaiian Affairs; and Public Safety.
• Rep. Kaniela Ing (Kīhei, Wailea, Mākena) will chair the Ocean, Marine Resources & Hawaiian Affairs Committee.  He will also serve as a member of the committees on: Agriculture; Education; Higher Education; and Public Safety.
• Rep. Angus L.K. McKelvey (West Maui, Māʻalaea, North Kīhei) will chair the Higher Education Committee.  He will also serve as a member of the committees on: Education; Energy & Environmental Protection; and Water & Land.
• Rep. Justin H. Woodson (Kahului, Puʻunēnē, Old Sand Hills, Maui Lani) will chair the Education Committee.  He will also serve as a member of committees on: Higher Education; Intrastate Commerce; Tourism; and Veterans, Military & International Affairs & Culture and the Arts.
• Rep. Kyle T. Yamashita (Spreckelsville, Pukalani, Makawao, Kula, Kēōkea, ʻUlupalakua, Kahului) will serve as a member of the committees on: Economic Development & Business; Finance; and Labor & Public Employment.
