Police attempted to make contact with the man, but say he barricaded himself within and refused to respond to police attempts to communicate. This morning at around 7:45 a.m., police negotiators were able to talk the man down from the apartment and arrested him in the back parking lot of the complex.
Police say 49-year-old Michael Soriano surrendered without further incident and was arrested for abuse of family/household member and kidnapping.
During the incident a text notification was issued to students at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College campus, which shares a fence-line with the condominium property at the south west corner of the complex.
Police say there was no active shooter, but a campus lockdown was implemented by the university as a precaution. The college temporarily closed the Cooperative Extension Building, Community Service Building and RDP Building until an all-clear was given at 8:10 a.m.

Sources tell us that the situation started as a civil matter and escalated when security and police responded.
The University of Hawai’i Maui College Campus had issued a notification to students during the incident, but has since lifted the advisory. Maui police say there was no active shooter but the neighboring UHMC Campus made the decision to lock down as a precaution.
The incident occurred on the southwest portion of the condominium complex that shares a fence line with the college. The college’s Cooperative Extension Building, Community Service Building and RDP Building were closed until an all-clear was given at 8:10 a.m.
UHMC’s Kit Zulueta said officials at UHMC found out about the incident when Maui police started barricading the lower portion (makai) of the camps. “Our administration was going to close the entire lower half of the campus, but by the time the second alert was going to be sent out, MPD said the issue had been resolved.”
Crews from the Maui Police Department’s Special Response team responded to the incident in tactical gear along with patrol units in the area.
