Electric Customers Advised: Prolonged Power Outages Possible

Due to the high winds from Hurricane Lane that damaged electrical equipment, Maui Electric is asking customers in the West Maui area currently without power to prepare for an extended outage this evening Friday, Aug. 24, through tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 25.

Downed poles and damaged electrical wires must be repaired in order to restore power and there is currently restricted access to some of these locations due to the fire. In the interest of safety, Maui Police Department will increase patrol units in the affected West Maui areas this evening.

Crews restored power today to critical infrastructure in the area, including the Lahaina Fire Station, Lahaina Police Station, and Lahaina Civic Center, which is serving as an emergency Red Cross shelter.

Maui Electric crews are continuing restoration efforts through the night in various areas of West Maui to repair about 30 broken, cracked or downed poles from Lahaina town to Kā‘anapali. Repairs also need to be made to two of the three transmission lines feeding West Maui. The remaining transmission line – running on steel poles – feeding West Maui remains in service with enough capacity to serve the area.

On Moloka‘i, repair crews were able to restore power to a majority of customers, with crews currently working to restore six remaining customers.

Maui Electric crews continue restoration efforts in West Maui, Moloka’i

12:30 p.m. 8.24.18: Maui Electric employees are continuing restoration efforts to bring about 4,100 customers back online in West Maui.

Response crews are currently assessing damages to the two of the three transmission lines feeding West Maui and damaged poles in Lahaina town.

The remaining transmission line – running on steel poles – feeding West Maui remains in service with enough capacity to serve the area.

On Moloka‘i, repair crews were able to restore power to parts of the island. The crews continue work to restore a remaining 1,800 customers at this time.

Maui Electric crews redeployed this morning to respond to outages

7:17 a.m. 8.24.18: After suspending response work due to hazardous conditions  overnight, Maui Electric crews since redeployed this morning to address power outages.

Currently, there are about 4,000 customers in the West Maui area without power.

On Moloka‘i, about 2,600 customer are experiencing a power outage. Cause of the outages is being assessed.

Should weather conditions worsen, work may need to halt to ensure the safety of our folks in the field. Crews will continue to respond as long as conditions remain safe for them to do so.

MAUI ELECTRIC DEEMS WEATHER CONDITIONS UNSAFE TO CONTINUE WORK

Due to high winds and falling trees that are currently posing dangerous working conditions, Maui Electric crews are halting work at this time. Crews will be redeployed to assess any outages and make repairs tomorrow morning as conditions improve and are deemed safe. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

LAHAINA OUTAGE:

Maui Electric would like to inform the public that parts of Lahaina are experiencing a power outage and crews are en route. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

KAHULUI AIRPORT POWER RESTORED:
Update: 7:56 p.m. 8.23.18

Normal power is back on at Kahului Airport. Operations are not impacted. Passengers should continue to check with their airline regarding flight status as some have canceled flights due to Hurricane Lane. An outage was reported at 4:02 p.m. prompting the use of backup power systems.

UPCOUNTRY OUTAGE:
Update: 9:13 p.m. 8.23.18

On Thursday, Aug. 23, at around 3 p.m. about 1,990 customers in parts of Upcountry Maui, including Kula, Olinda, Pi’iholo and Makawao, experienced a power outage. A majority of customers were restored by 6:08 p.m. with the remaining customers brought back online by 7:56 p.m. after crews made repairs to the lines.

Maui Electric responding to outage in Upcountry Maui, restores power to Lahaina area

Currently, Maui Electric crews are responding to an outage affecting about 1,990 customers in parts of Upcountry Maui, including Kula, Olinda, Pi‘iholo and Makawao. The customers lost power around 3 p.m. today after a tree came down on power lines.

Also today, around 3:20 p.m. about 1,250 customers in parts of Lahaina, including Olowalu and Launiupoko, experienced a power outage after a tree branch came down on lines. All customers were restored by 4:25 p.m.

As Hurricane Lane approaches, repair crews are being dispatched as long as conditions are safe to do so. Kahului Airport is experiencing a power outage. Backup systems have been activated. There may be brief delays as computer systems reboot. Operations will be available on backup power. Remember to check with your airline regarding flight status before leaving for the airport.

Electrical service has been restored to all customers in the Lahaina area.  A notification about the outage was issued at 3:45 p.m.

Maui Electric Kahului offices to close on Aug. 24 due to approaching storm

Crews remain prepared to respond to potential storm impacts

Due to impending weather conditions from Hurricane Lane and for the safety of customers, Maui Electric’s Customer Service and Engineering offices at 210 W. Kamehameha Ave. will be closed to walk-in service on Friday, Aug. 24. Customers can continue to contact the company via phone at 871-9777, toll-free for Lānaʻi or Molokaʻi at 1-877-871-8461, or online at www.mauielectric.com.

There are no scheduled or planned outages at this time. However, as the hurricane approaches the islands, customers should prepare for storm-related power interruptions. In the event of outages, repair crews will be dispatched when conditions are safe to do so. Before the storm hits or if there is a power outage, the company also reminds customers to:

· Unplug all unnecessary electric equipment and appliances until the storm has passed or until power is restored. Should you need to evacuate, take emergency supplies and remember to shut off electricity at the main breaker or switch.

· When using a portable generator, carefully read and follow instructions in the manufacturer’s manual. Do not plug the generator into your household electrical outlets.

· Make plans in advance to go to a safe location where electricity will be available if someone in your home depends on an electrically powered life support system and you don’t have a backup generator.

· If you have a rooftop photovoltaic system, consult with your licensed solar contractor regarding normal and emergency operation procedures for your solar system. As a safety precaution, most photovoltaic systems are designed to safely shut down during outages. PV systems typically have monitoring systems which allow owners to check on the status of their system.

· Stay at least 30 feet away (about two car lengths) from downed power lines as there may be electricity running through it and may be dangerous. If you see someone injured after touching a downed power line, call 9-1-1 for help; don’t try to rescue the individual.
