Council to hold Lahaina public hearing and special meetings in December

Maui Council Chair Alice L. Lee announced that the Maui County Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center Social Hall on a proposed ordinance for the Kahoma Village project, where five residential buildings were destroyed in the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires. Lee said the council will also hold special meetings Dec. 13 and 23 in the Council Chamber to discuss bills amending land-use and development standards for the Honua‘ula development—a 670-acre, multiuse housing project in South Maui. The Council’s Land Use Committee began scrutinizing proposed exemptions for the proposed Kahoma Village fast track affordable housing project in West Maui.

The project is proposed for construction on 21.6 acres of land, situated makai of the Honoapiʻilani Highway, and bordered by Front street to the west. It is also situated between Kenui Street to the south and the Kahoma Stream and the Lahaina Cannery Mall to the north.

Kahoma Village Project Calls for 203 Units in West Maui

Projected construction costs are estimated at $60 million, with anticipated completion to take four years upon receipt of Section 201H-38 approval, SMA Use Permits, and other construction-related permit approvals.
