Water department to implement new water-use and meter-sizing method starting Jan. 1

Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, in accordance with Ordinance 5759 adopted by the Maui County Council, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply (DWS) will implement a new method for projecting water demand and sizing water meters that focuses on daily water usage instead of the Hunter Curve Method, which was based on the number of plumbing fixtures—such as toilets or showers—in a building. The new method will apply to building permit applications and applications for new or additional water use.

Wai Now: Public forum sparks debate on Upcountry water well development

On Wednesday night, members of the Upcountry community gathered to discuss a possible public-private partnership aimed at incrementally building one to four water wells in Kula, Maui.

Olinda water work, Aug. 9

The Department of Water Supply reports that customers along Olinda Road and Piʻiholo Road may experience low/no water pressure on Aug. 9, 2023 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. while work is conducted to replace a meter.

Small water meter replacement begins this month in Kahului, and Lahaina to Nāpili

In June 2020, the department began its small meter replacement project. The project is expected to last for four years. An estimated 26,000 water meters will be replaced. These meters are 2 inches or less in size.

The Department of Water Supply will hold a public hearing to adopt new, proposed administrative rules Relating to Water Service and Water Meter Reservations.

The Maui County Council Water Resources Committee will receive a presentation from the Department of Water Supply focused on application processing for the Upcountry Water Meter Priority List.

Cost-Effective Alternative to Water Meter Upgrade Offered

Effective July 1, 2016, the Water Department is offering additional fixture unit capacity for single-family dwellings and accessory dwellings with 1” or smaller meters.

Effective July 1, 2016, a sewer rate increase averaging 5% will go into effect in for general and agricultural customers on Maui.

Exemptions Proposed to Help Those on Upcountry Water Meter List

Exemptions are being proposed to applicants on the Upcountry water meter priority waiting list to help those wanting to build an ʻohana unit or a second dwelling for a family member.
