IAO THEATER CELEBRATES 80 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

The Historic Iao Theater in Wailuku town celebrates it’s 80th anniversary today with a ribbon cutting ceremony tonight.The structure is the oldest theater on Maui and in the state of Hawaii.

Residents used to pay a nickel to watch Saturday morning cartoons at the theater.Today, the facility is host to a variety of groups including Maui On Stage, which puts on five productions each year.There’s also a monthly play reading series, film showings, and a Hawaiian cultural concert series.

In 1995, the building was named to the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
