MIL teams suffer opening losses

Both of the MIL’s runners-up – King Kekaulike in Division I and Seabury Hall in D-II –suffered losses in last night’s opening round of the state girls’ volleyball tournaments.

Local hopes are now riding with a pair of MIL teams – Kamehameha-Maui in D-I and Molokai High in D-II –that were seeded second in their respective state events.

Playing on its home court, Kekaulike suffered a 25-12, 25-21, 25-14 sweep at the hands of Mililani, which earned the dubious distinction of facing top-seeded Punahou in a 7 p.m. match tonight on the same floor.

In other D-I matches, Kaiser surprised Moanalua in four close sets, Kamehameha-Oahu swept Pearl City and Waiakea needed the maximum five sets to beat Castle.

Waikakea meets Kamehama-Maui at 7 tonight.

In the D-II tourney on Oahu, Seabury was ousted from title contention by suffering a 26-24, 25-13, 21-25, 25-21 loss to Leilehua.

In other D-II games, Kalaheo edged Waimea in five, St. Francis swept Ka’u and Hawaii Baptist swept Honokaa.

Molokai opens its bid tonight, facing St. Francis in a 5 o’clock match at Kalani High.

Kekaulike and Seabury were relegated to the consolation bracket, Na Alii facing Moamalua at 3:30 and Seabury facing Waimea.
