House Music Finds a Home on Maui
By Katie McMillan
Is Maui poised to become the next Ibiza, the Spanish island that is world renowned for its nonstop electronic music club scene? True, we don’t have clubs capable of packing thousands of people on the dance floor, but we do happen to have a growing, thriving scene of dance floor junkies and some of the world’s most renowned DJs are making their way out here to get in on the action.
Pio Marasco, a Maui-based DJ and founder of Nitelife Music, has played a major role in bringing some house music’s biggest and brightest superstars to Maui. Pio has collaborated with legends such as Tony Humphries, Halo, and Marques Wyatt, who will be returning to Maui on Saturday November 20th to elevate the crowds once again after his last sold out show.
If you love to dance, Marques Wyatt is for you. Marques is the founder of one of Los Angeles’s longest running house music institutions, Deep. The event attracted over a thousand people every Sunday for over ten years. Several of the worlds finest DJs performed at “Deep,” including Timmy Regisford of Shelter, David Morales, Ben Watt of Everything but the Girl, Dimitri from Paris, Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, and Louie Vega. Since closing Deep at the end of last year, Marques has been in the studio recording his next album. Perhaps Maui will get a sneak peak at what’s to come.
A big part of Marques’s magic is that he is always giving back to the community that supports him. He founded DeepCares, a non-profit division of “Deep” that organizes and sponsors purpose-driven events benefiting different facets of local and global communities.
Marques Wyatt will be at Timba on Saturday November 20th from 9pm-2am at Timba in Lahaina. Contact Timba at 808-661-9873 for more information and to purchase tickets.
