A male pedestrian was critically injured in an early morning traffic accident on the Hana Highway today.  The 27-year-old Wailuku man was walking in the northbound  lane of the Highway when he was struck by a 1999 Honda Accord, driven by a 32-year-old Pukalani man, who was also traveling north on the Highway.

The accident was reported at 12:49 a.m., Saturday, May 7, 2011 on the Hana Highway, about 485 feet north of Hansen Road in Kahului.

The pedestrian suffered critical, life-threatening injuries, and was being treated at the Maui Memorial Medical Center at last report.  The operator of the vehicle was not injured.

The incident forced the closure of the Hana Highway from 1:30 to 4:15 a.m. while police conducted an investigation at the scene of the crash.  The temporary closure extended from Pulehu Road to the Haleakala Highway.  Maui police are investigating the involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol as
possible factors.
