The 5-foot-7 guard has signed a national letter f intent to attend Gonzaga, which advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament during the past season.
Viela led the Lunas to the state Division-I title as a junior and is a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year.
SOCCER: Hawaii’s Natasha Kai was not among the players selected to the 21-player roster for this summer’s World Cup in Germany. Coach Pia Sundhage went with four forwards: Amy Rodriguez, Lauren Cheney, Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach.
BASEBALLL: Shane Victorino had a triple, his fifth of the season, in four at-bats and scored a run for Philadelphia in a 6-4 road win over second-place Florida. With the victory, the Phillies improved their record to major league-best 23-11 and opened up a three-game lead over the Marlins in the National League East.
Kurt Suzuki played in a DH role last night, delivering a run-scoring double in four at-bats in support of Trevor Cahill, who improved his season record to 6-0 as Oakland topped Texas 7-2. The win enabled the Athletics to move within one game of the Angels in the AL West.
