From playing the blues with Mick Fleetwood to grooving Hawaiian style with Willie K or Barry Flanagan (of Grammy Award-winning Hapa fame), Eric Gilliom is proving that he knows more than one way to fire up a crowd.

“Soul Sessions,” Gilliom’s first solo project, sold out its two-night run at Stella Blues in April and, as a result, it will become a featured monthly event. Each show showcases Gilliom and an all-star cast of musicians performing Gilliom’s originals in addition to the classic soul and R&B hits of artists such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, and Van Morrison all done with Gilliom’s unique vocal arrangements.

“I’m thrilled to share my passion for soul, funk, and R&B with my fans. These were the sounds that originally inspired my music career. It’s fun to mix things up, show my range, and perform for a crowd in such an intimate setting,” says Gilliom. Soul Sessions is an evening full of surprising delight, with the spirit of music enticing you; one can’t help but tap their foot, bop their head, or clap their hands to the beat from start to finish. The celebrity guest spots are an added bonus too, like the dessert Stella’s serves up with the dinner show.

In an interview with Maui Now, Gilliom talked about his new band, The Eric Gilliom Band, which includes Stew Sherman, a New York session drummer now living on Oahu, who has played with musical talents ranging from The Temptations to local favorite Henry Kapono. David (Wolf) Wolfberg is on bass and the three are now spending their time jamming in the studio working on a new album full of original soul tunes to be released sometime later this year.
