Jack McCoy’s Deeper Shade of Blue Explores Roots of Wave Riding

Just as surfing’s roots began in Hawaii, legendary filmmaker Jack McCoy’s latest film, A Deeper Shade of Blue, will also begin its journey in Hawaii. Tonight, Wednesday June 15^th at 8pm, McCoy’s latest flick, A Deeper Shade of Blue will premier in Hawaii under the stars during the opening night of The Maui Film Festival. McCoy, who will be on hand to introduce his film, will also be honored with the Festival’s Beacon Award.

In what Ethan Stewart of the Santa Barbara Independent called, “the cinematic manifestation of the aloha spirit,”A Deeper Shade Of Blue gets to the heart of surfing’s deepest roots first set in Hawaii. The film depicts the Waikiki – California surf connection through the eyes of surfing legends such as Rabbit Kekai, Joe Quigg, Gerry Lopez, Barry Kanaiapuni, Phil Edwards, Miki Dora, the Marshall Brothers, and David Nuuhiva.  McCoy then crosses over to the talented young Pipeline phenomenon, Jamie O’Brien and on to the Australia crossing of the sport with George Greenough, Wayne Lynch, and Michael Peterson.

McCoy’s awe inspiring visuals are brought even more to light with the revolutionary underwater mini sub tracking shots spotlighting Manoa Drollet on the modern short board in Tahiti’s heaviest barrels. The film also shares how Hawaiian Princess Kaiulani and then Gidget kick surfing into high gear and inspire a cavalcade of women surfers.

McCoy’s inspiration for surfing came from growing up in Hawaii on the windward side of Oahu in Kailua. McCoy’s father Jack McCoy was a local radio and television personality. The Sr. McCoy pushed his 8-year old son on his first wave a Waikiki Beach that began a life long love of the ocean.
