Did you know that by 2020, one in every four citizens of Maui County will be age 60 and over? In addition, a 2006 report complied by the Maui County Office of Aging says that people live longer in Hawaii than any other state. While on many accounts this is cause for celebration, it also illustrates a growing need for caregivers and service providers with experience and expertise in serving Maui’s aging population.

The Aging with Aloha Coalition, in partnership with the County of Maui, publishes a widely distributed and popular resource directory to serve Maui’s senior and disabled population. The print version is distributed free of charge in addition to being available for download online at www.agingwithaloha.com.

The directory is very comprehensive and includes resource listings for clothing, employment, finances (including tax preparation assistance), food, housing (including affordable housing), rental subsidies, assisted-living facilities, foster care and nursing homes, transportation services, emergency preparedness, education and training programs, adult day care, caregiver relief programs, mental health services, legal services, health and medical services, support groups, and end-of-life services.

The Aging with Aloha Resource Directory is currently being updated and a new edition will be distributed this fall. An additional 1,000 copies of the directory will be printed, reaching an even wider audience. Business and organizations that would like to be listed in the directory should call 808-283-4120. Advertising opportunities are also available and funds go to support the directories publication.

“After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from long-term care providers, nurses, and members of our community, we are pleased to publish a more expansive directory this year,” says Aging With Aloha Coalition Director Rita Barreras.

The Aging with Aloha Coalition is an island-wide coalition consisting of more than 80 individuals including older adults, consumers, caregivers, County representatives, service providers, government officials, educators, business development and community action agencies.  The coalition is dedicated to establishing and sustaining a comprehensive coordinated home and community-based model of services that will foster quality of life and death with dignity for Maui County’s older adults.
