The island of Maui is under a Flash Flood Advisory until 4:45 p.m. today (Tuesday, July 12, 2011). The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the advisory this afternoon.
At 1:36 p.m., radar showed heavy rain over South Maui near Ulupalakua, or about 5 to 10 miles south of Kihei. The area of heavy rain was drifting slowly to the southwest.
Forecasters with the NWS say other locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Wailea and Makena.
As a precaution, the public should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot.
