Firefighters Battle Flare Ups in Kaunakakai

Firefighters continue mop-up operations today at a 200-acre brush fire first reported on Sunday in Kaunakakai.

On Monday, the fire remained contained, with reports of a few flare-ups within the burn area.

The fire was first reported at around 1 p.m. on January 29, 2012, off of Hoomalu Drive on Molokai.

At the height of the blaze, the fire came within 50 feet of homes in Kalamaula Mauka and caused $5,000 damage to a shipping container at the site.

On Monday,the Maui Fire Department’s Engine-4, Engine-9, Engine-12, Tanker-4, and Ladder-3 were on scene, along with wildland support and a county tanker.

Crews had planned to monitor the area overnight.

No additional damages or injuries were reported.
