There’s new incentive to take the stairs the next time you visit the county building in Wailuku.

The stairwell of each floor of the Kalana O Maui building is now decorated with murals painted by county employees in a StairWELL Decorating Contest.

The contest was part of the County’s Health and Wellness initiative to give county workers and members of the public an incentive to develop healthier habits such as walking instead of riding the elevator.

County officials say each department was responsible for painting their floor’s stairwell with pretty colors, attractive designs and/or motivational messages.

County workers came in on their own time over the weekend to paint the stairwell.

The designs were then judged on on artistry and inspiration by three independent artists.

The results include:

  • 1st place, Most Inspiring, Department of Finance (2nd floor)
  • 1st place, Most Beautiful, Mayor’s Office (9th floor)
  • 2nd place, Most Inspiring, Department of Personnel Services (6nd floor)
  • 2nd place, Most Beautiful, Department of Water Supply (5th floor)

The Mayor’s Office encourages the public to visit and view the art work.  Teachers, principals and parents can arrange tours for students by calling Kit Zulueta at 270-8299.
