Hana Community Recycling Event March 8-9, 2013
By Wendy Osher
A community recycling event is planned in the East Maui town of Hana on Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9.
The event runs from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on both days, at the staging area of the Hana Landfill.
The recycling event is hosted by the Community Work Day Program of Maui, with support from the County of Maui.
The recycling event is for items not accepted into landfills in Maui County. Items that will be accepted include appliances, scrap metal, tires, de-valved propane tanks, computers, TVs, electronics and household and vehicle batteries for transportation to recycling facilities in Central Maui.
The CWD will NOT accept vehicles or any hazardous waste materials. There will also be a $5 per tire recycling fee for all tires.
Event organizers say that over the past three years, this event has removed more than 2,056 tires, 1,410 appliances, and 1,628 vehicle batteries from the Hana community for recycling.
Elderly and disabled community members are encouraged to call CWD for help transporting items to the staging area. Assistance is available by calling the Community Work Day Program at 877-2524 or emailing [email protected].
The event is made possible by a partnership between the County of Maui, Department of Environmental Management, Abandoned Vehicles and Metals Section, Maui Tow & Transport, Maui Disposal, Hammerhead Metals Recycling and the Community Work Day Program.
