A Maui man was airlifted from Kaihalulu Bay in Hāna on Saturday after falling about 15 feet from a rock outcropping, officials said.
The 32-year-old man suffered a broken lower right leg and sustained serious head injuries in the fall, according to Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
The incident was reported at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, in the area often referred to as “Red Sand Beach.”
Bystanders reportedly assisted the patient to shore where he was treated by medics and fire crews.
According to Chief Mainaga, rescue crews utilized the department’s Air-1 helicopter to transport the patient to a landing zone at the Hana Ball Park.
He was then transported via Maui Medevac to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, officials said.
Similar incidents was reported on April 2, 2012 when a father and daughter were medevaced from the area, and on May 30, 2012 when a visitor fell 15-feet at Kaihalulu.
