The Kaupō fire that was first reported nine days ago on Saturday, July 13, 2013, has finally been extinguished, officials announced today.
Maui Fire officials declared the fire extinguished at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2013.
The area of the fire was revised from the first reported 65 acres to 87 total acres after crews plotted GPS coordinates taken from the department’s Air-1 helicopter, officials said.
Fire officials say the stubborn blaze was fireworks-related and likely intentionally set.
