Surveillance Concludes after Shark Sighting in Mākena

A portion of beach in South Maui was under surveillance for about two hours earlier today following a confirmed shark sighting in the area of Mākena Landing, DLNR officials said.

The sighting did not result in any beach closures, however snorkelers in the area got out of the water, and state officers issued warnings in and around the area to beach users, said Laura Stevens, Education and Outreach Coordinator with the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Officers with the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement issued warnings and conducted surveillance for two hours, with no further sightings through 1 p.m., said Stevens.

According to state officials, DOCARE officers will be departing the area.

The sighting comes two days after a shark attack at the nearby Ulua Beach in Wailea, located to the north of Mākena. The California woman bitten in the Wednesday morning attack has since been released from the hospital.
