An estimated 8,366 gallons of waste water overflowed in an easement area next to the baseball field on Kanaloa Avenue in Wailuku, county officials said.

The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported that the overflow occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, and was stopped by 1:30 p.m. on the same day.

“The spill was caused by a blockage of grit and sand in a main sewerline,” said Maui County Communications Director Rod Antone in a statement.

Officials say the line was flushed, standing water was vacuumed, and the area was disinfected.

The overflow did not enter any waterway, and the area has no public access, according to county officials.
