Cleanup of Former Maui Airport Landfill Proposed

The US Army Corps of Engineers hosts a public meeting this Wednesday, Dec. 4, to gather public input on its proposal to perform an environmental cleanup of the former Maui Airport Landfill.

The plan is prepared in accordance with the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites.

According to a public notice issued by the agency, the proposal includes an overview of the contamination discovered at the former military site, the potential risks, cleanup standards, remediation alternatives, and the selection of a preferred alternative.

US Army Corps of Engineers representatives will be available at the meeting to answer questions and receive comments.

The meeting runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Pōmaikaʻi Elementary School Cafeteria in Kahului.
