Flooding in East Maui, High Stream Levels Near Keʻanae

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Maui until 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014.

NWS forecasters report that at around 10:48 p.m., a stream gauge at Kaunakakai recorded high levels with persistent rain. The area of rain was nearly stationary.

At around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, the agency reported high stream levels at Honopou near the Keʻanae area of east Maui with persistent rain.

Other locations included in the flood advisory are: Kanahā Beach Park, Wailuku, Waiheʻe,  Waiehu, Spreckelsville, Paʻuwela, Pāʻia, Nāpili, Makawao, Kapalua, Kahakuloa, Huelo, Hoʻokipa, Honolua, Honokōwai, Honokōhau, Haliʻimaile, and Haʻikū, the NWS forecast stated.

As a precautionary measure, the public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

The advisory may need to be extended beyond 12:30 a.m. in heavy rain persists.
