Maui Water Conservation Poster Contest Draws 889 Entries

The Maui County Department of Water Supply received a total of 889 entries for its 5th Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest, more than doubling the amount of entrants from the previous year.
Entries this year focused on the theme “E Mālama I Ka Wai,” which translates to “Preserve and Care for the Water,” and included a water conservation message in the artwork.
Department officials say the goal of the contest was to educate youth in Maui County on the importance of water conservation, and encourage students to take an active role in ensuring the sustainability of the island water supply.
Winning entries were selected based on their water conservation message, originality, and visual effectiveness.
The top three winners in each grade category received $100 for first place, $75 for second, $50 for third place; and honorable mention winners received $15.
Winning entries will be featured in the 2015 DWS Water Conservation Calendar, on the county website at www.mauiwater.org and will also be honored during a 2 p.m. ceremony on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, in the mayor’s office.
The posters will also be on display during the month of April at the Department of Water Supply offices, located on the 5th floor of the Kalana O Maui Building in Wailuku.

The judges for this year’s event included: Randy Hufford, professional photographer; Pōmaikaʻi Kaniaupio-Crozier, Pu’u Kukui Watershed Partnership Director; and Marti Buckner, Water Resource Planner.
