Residents on Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi together raised more than $96,000 during an Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk held on Saturday, May 3, 2014.
The neighbor island fundraisers kicked off the 36th Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk schedule of events, sponsored by the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association.
Similar fundraiser walks are planned on other islands throughout the month, with the Maui event slated for this weekend, Saturday, May 10th.
Funds raised from the events benefit hundreds of non-profit organizations around the state, with the Maui event going directly to non-profits within the county.
Event organizers say the Visitor Industry Charity Walk on Maui last year raised a total of $835,557, and went toward more than 100 non-profit organizations within Maui County.
The series of events is considered one of the state’s largest single-day fundraisers, drawing thousands of walkers, and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for local non-profit organizations.
On Molokaʻi, a total of $66,830 was raised with the Molokaʻi High School Athletics department raising the most funds on the island, totaling $14,155, according to event organizers.
On Lānaʻi, the event was sponsored by Pūlama Lānaʻi, and raised a total of $29,271, with The Four Seasons Resorts Lānaʻi raising the most funds on the island, totaling $5,757, event organizers said.
“The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association is proud to host events on Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi where every cent raised will stay on the island to benefit the local community,” said Lisa Paulson, Executive Director of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association in a press release announcement. “The Charity Walk represents the visitor industry’s commitment to giving back and we are pleased to support our Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi non-profits,” she said.
The Maui Visitor Industry Charity Walk begins at 7 a.m. this Saturday, May 10, at the War Memorial Soccer Field.
