Experience a Taste of South African Food and Wine
By Vanessa Wolf
Makena Beach & Golf Resort continues their monthly Food and Wine Educations Series with a taste of South Africa this Thursday, May 22.
Held in the resort’s Molokini Bar & Grille, join Master Sommlier Patrick Okubo as he offers a chance to experience the wines of the Dark Continent.
Celebrating 20 years of South African democracy and the opening of international trade for its wines, Makena’s Chef De Cuisine, Chef Kurt Lesmerises offers food pairings featuring his take on some traditional South African dishes.
Start with Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2012 paired with an “Atchar” Pickled Vegetable Salad.
The resort explains that “achar” means pickled in Hindi. A traditional South African dish, it was brought by Indian laborers in the 19th century.
Next up is Glen Carlou, Classique, Caberent Blend 2009 paired with braised meat.
A tradition in South Africa’s Cape Malay community, the meat is prepared with spices such as nutmeg, allspice and chili peppers.
Lastly, plan to taste Vilafonte M, Malbec / Merlot 2003 paired with Borewors Sausage.
Based on the Dutch sausage Verseworst, Borewors is a type of sausage popular in South Africa and was inspired by the influence of the Dutch East India Trading Company.
The wine pairing starts at 6:30 p.m. and is available at a cost of $45 per person, plus tax and gratuity.
