Maui Police Chief Selection Could Come as Early as Today
By Wendy Osher
A decision could come as early as today for the next police chief on Maui. The Maui Police Commission is wrapping up interviews today and is expected to deliberate this afternoon to select the next chief.
There are six finalists in the running including: Acting Police Chief Clayton Tom; Assistant Chief Victor Ramos; Captain Tivoli Faaumu; Retired Assistant Chief Larry Hudson; Retired Major from the Honolulu Police Department Moana Heu; and retired NewYork Police Department Lieutenant Chuck Tsang.
Each candidate is undergoing a two hour individual interview during executive session that began yesterday and continues today.
The applicants are seeking to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Chief Gary Yabuta who retired from the post on July 31 to take on employment at the federal level as director for the Hawaiʻi High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program in Honolulu.
