State airports in Hawaiʻi will implement a fee increase for parking at six facilities on Dec. 1, 2015, including fee increases at Kahului and Kapalua Airports on Maui.

The new parking rates mark the first increase in more than four years, according to officials with the state Department of Transportation, Airports Division.

The daily maximum rate at five Hawaiʻi airports will increase by $3 and includes the following:

  • Honolulu International Airport: The maximum rate for 24 hours of parking at Honolulu International Airport will go from $15 to $18.
  • Neighbor Island Airports: The maximum daily rate at Kahului Airport, Kapalua Airport, Līhue Airport, Hilo International Airport and Kona International Airport at Keahole will increase from $12 to $15.

The rate for the fourth hour of stay is also being adjusted. At Honolulu, the fourth hour will increase by $3. At neighbor island airports, the fourth hour rate will increase by $2. After the fifth hour the daily rate will be applied. Signs notifying the public of the change will be posted at key locations beginning on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015.

Short term rates for airport customers parking less than four hours will not change. A free grace period is allowed for those who exit within 15 minutes. Free airport cell phone lots will continue to be available for those picking up passengers.

DOT officials say the additional revenue will be utilized to help support increasing operational costs for Hawaiʻi’s airport system. The airport system is solely self sufficient and does not depend on income or sales taxes.

State transportation officials say parking at Hawaiʻi Airports for a 24 hour period is still less expensive when compared with rates at mainland airports. “To put it into perspective, airport parking is less expensive than overnight parking at various Oʻahu hotels which can cost as much as $40 a night,” DOT officials said, noting that parking rates at some parking garages in Downtown Honolulu range anywhere from $24 to $96 for 24 hours.
