Father and Son Arrested for Suspicion of Arson in Gas Station Fire
Maui police arrested a father and son on suspicion of first degree arson after a fire reported on Sunday evening, Jan. 24, 2016 at the Tesoro Gas Express in Kahului.
Police say a caller reported the incident at 11:31 p.m.
An investigation revealed that a white SUV with two male suspects arrived at the station at about 11:12 p.m. Police say the suspects were identified as Joseph Oania, 54, and Brandon Oania, 32, of Kahului.
Police say Joseph Oania allegedly entered the store, purchased gasoline and returned to the pump. Police allege the suspects sprayed gasoline on the pump, lit it on fire then fled the area.
On Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016 Wailuku Patrol units located Joseph Oania, and arrested him for suspicion of first degree arson.
Two days later, on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016 the second suspect, Brandon Oania was located by Wailuku Patrol units. He was also arrested for suspicion of first degree arson.
Police say both were released pending further investigation.
