AARP Seeks Nominations for Community Service Award

AARP Hawaii is seeking nominations for the 2016 Andrus Award for Community Service.

AARP Hawaii is seeking nominations for the 2016 Andrus Award for Community Service, which honors volunteers who share their experience, talent and skills in the community.

Nominations are open for any Hawai‘i volunteer age 50 or older—not just AARP members.

The application deadline is June 30. Applications may be submitted online.

The award honors AARP Founder Ethel Percy Andrus, whose motto, “to serve, not to be served,” lives on 56 years after she founded the organization, which was created to help older Americans age with dignity and purpose.

“Each day in Hawai‘i, hundreds of volunteers from all walks of life have a transformative impact in communities across the state,” said AARP State President Gerry Silva. “It’s important to acknowledge that impact and let volunteers know that their service is recognized and valued.”

The screening of nominees considers a range of criteria, including positive impact on the lives of individuals ages 50 or older and improvement of the community in which the work was done.

Andrus Award nominees must meet the following eligibility guidelines:

• Nominee must be 50 years or older.
• The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must have been performed on a volunteer basis, without pay.
• The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must reflect AARP’s vision and mission.
