Five Physicians Join Maui Medical Group
Maui Medical Group has appointed five new healthcare practitioners to its Maui offices.
They have joined over 70 experienced healthcare practitioners at Maui Medical Group, one of the county’s largest multi-specialty healthcare providers, serving Maui County since 1961.
Maui Medical Group offers five clinics on Maui—Wailuku, Lahaina, Pukalani, Kīhei and Kahului.

Derek Illastron, MD, Internal Medicine
He received his degree at Ross University School of Medicine in Portsmouth, Dominica. He obtained his postdoctoral training at UMNDJ-Newark Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. Prior to joining MMG, Dr. Illastron practiced as primary care physician at Cambridge Health Alliance at Everett and Revere, Massachusetts; Harvard Vanguard in Boston, Massachusetts; Pentucket Medical Haverhill, Massachusetts. He most recently practiced at the Cambridge Health Alliance Community Health Clinic in Everett and Revere, Massachusetts. He works in Kaiser’s Pukalani and Wailuku clinics.
Heather Bejenaru, MD, Family Practice
She obtained her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco; and completed her residency training at the San Jose-O’Connor Family Medicine Residency Program, the only family medicine residency affiliated with the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Bejenaru has previously worked at several medical clinics on Maui; Kaiser Kīhei Clinic, Upcountry Medical Clinic, Veterans Affairs, Doctors on Call and Wailea Medical Center & Urgent Care.
Dr. Bejenaru is board-certified in family practice and works in the Kīhei clinic.
Shannon Evans, DO, Family Practice
She received her medical degree in osteopathy at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in Kansas City, Missouri.
She served her residency at the University of Wyoming Family Medicine at Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Prior to joining Maui Medical Group, she worked as a family medicine physician at the Sublette County Rural Healthcare District in Marbleton, Wyoming.
Dr. Evans works in the Wailuku clinic.
Rey Lalwani, PA-C, Family Practice
She received her bachelor’s degree from Pace University in New York and her master’s degree in physician assistant studies from George Washington University in DC.
She previously worked at Montgomery Family Medicine in Maryland and at Metropolitan NeuroEar Group in Maryland.
Ms. Lalwani works in the Wailuku clinic.
Maxi Lohrengel-West, PA-C, Internal Medicine
She attended Humboldt University Berlin Medical School in Berlin, Germany.
She graduated from MEDEX Northwest, the University of Washington School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant Program. She obtained her master’s degree in physician assistant studies at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Ms. West is NCCPA certified and works in the Kahului and Kīhei clinics.
